The Big City

Eric was our driver and was getting tired of being out. He requires lots of alone time. We were headed to Ghirardelli Square from the Union Square area to feast on ice cream. There is a parking garage under the square. The cost is $2.25 for each 20 minutes or $30.00 total. If you get a restaurant validation, it is free for up to 1 1/2 hours. By the time we got to the bottom of the garage where an empty space was Eric was done. His comment, “Well, that just cost us 50 cents,” made us all double-over in laughter.

We had fun in the city. It felt like a vacation for sure!

Why didn’t you park in the PUBLIC garage that is much cheaper?

We didn’t realize parking would be that much or that there was cheaper public parking. So, poor planning. We managed to snack on our Sundaes and be out of the garage before we had to pay. Next time…

For instance, the city-run garage at Kearny Sq. Garage is so much cheaper than nearby Chinatown North Beach Public Parking for short trips.

Same for the city-run Sutter-Stockton Garage near Union Square.

Or use the bargain basement Civic Center garage on weekends and walk or BART over to other areas of town. Best of all, park at a BART park and ride on the peninsula and take BART into the city.

Great! Thank you for all of the pointers. I look forward to using them next time!
