Is it Spring?

By the look of our yard, it will soon be Spring!
100_0544

This is definitely the “little cilantro that could.” The squirrels have dug in this pot so many times burying things, I’m amazed anything has made it. But it has!

This bush lines the back of our porch. It was here, but I don’t remember it having flowers when we moved here in the fall.

100_0553

I’m not sure what is in the corner of that bed. A weed? Or is it something worth keeping around?
100_0550

These tulips were our contribution. I had no idea all of the flowers were already in the yard. So it does seem a bit gluttonous, but you can never have any too many flowers right? We kept the squirrels away from the bulbs with some chicken wire.
100_0551

Here is a calla lily! There are not too many blooming yet, but they all look like they will all be popping soon!

I think these are called bird of paradise. These are on the other side of our house. They seem almost too exotic for a yard, but I love them! I can see them when I drive up the driveway.

I hope Spring is coming in your area too. I think St. Louis is expecting snow today, bummer.

Peace,

Katy ^_^

PS Does anyone else use Wordpress? For the life of me, I cannot get the images centered unless the text is centered. What is going on? Half the time the images are mixed up centered and not. I’ve looked at the code and it is coding the image as text, so any suggestions? I removed the text tags and still no luck. Perhaps it is my browser. I’ve tried Camino and Safari without luck.

How We Roll

I’ve been working on projects tonight. Eric is training. I think the kitties are used to TV time. Here they are… waiting.

I didn’t realize how cheap tofu is! I think it was around $1.25 for all this tofu! Crazy. I really wanted to make this recipe, but I couldn’t find coconut at Trader Joe’s. So I asked around and was too impatient for a response and made it my way. I dried the tofu between some paper towels and coated it in Soy Vey Very Very Teriyaki.

100_0533

Here’s the Teriyaki bottle. Yum, it is local to San Francisco too.

100_0534

I popped them in the oven at 425 degrees for 30 minutes. Thank God, I read the part about putting Pam on the cookie sheet.

100_0536

Um, yeah. It is as bad as it looks. Thankfully, the tofu came up fine and tasted okay, but the cookie sheet is nasty. I’m hoping the dishwashing fairies have pity on me and that soaking this in water and dish soap will loosen up everything. We’ll see.

Sarai, sent me this tofu suggestion. I definitely plan on trying this out.

In other news, I’ve been devouring Shane Claiborne’s books. I read Irresistible Revolution last week and finished it yesterday. I started Jesus for President, but haven’t gotten too far. I’ve made it to the gym two afternoons in a row, and been heading to bed earlier because of it.

I’m also determined to get moving on some of my UFOs (unfinished objects). There are too many to count. Here is the lay out for the denim skirt muslin. Yay!

100_0535

Not much to look at, but closer to a skirt! Also, my parents are finally coming to visit in March. They had tickets to come in December, but my grandfather’s stroke happened. I’m excited to introduce my dad to my new home and work on further home decorating with my mom. There is also the obligatory visit to the Winchester Mystery House. Eric has already opted out of this. He says it is all just too mysterious. I love it. What a fun, crazy, silly story and weird house to go with it.

Since I started knitting socks on the unplanned trip to Texas in December, I figured I needed to get them at least to the point where I can work on the heel with my mom in town. She’s a pro–having made 2 or 3 pairs already. I got out my knitting for the first time since I’ve been back tonight. I’ve never knitted at home. I’m quickly realizing why. There is nary a moment when the yarn isn’t flossing Scotch’s teeth, or he’s using a knitting needle like a toothpick. What a nut. It is too cute, but not conducive to knitting. Here’s how far I’ve come so far.

100_0537

I’m relieved that I remembered how to knit/purl okay. I’ll just have to figure out how to knit without Scotch’s “help.”

I’m enjoying a glass of wine, but not the hiccups I’ve had for the past thirty minutes. I haven’t given something up for lent in a long time. This year, I plan to forgo alcohol and sodas. Should be interesting–It always is.

Peace,

Katy ^_^

Team in Training schedules are all over our place, gym bags litter the floor, our garage is a mess of bike parts, replacement tubes and some busted tubes–that darned glass in the tread. This time, however, the athlete is Eric. The Silicon Valley team is a bit different than the Gateway team, but just as awesome. Saturday mornings start with Eric snoozing his alarm at least 800 times. We are both up by 7 because of this. :) He runs, swims, and bikes with the team and gets home around noon. Today he pulled out the grungiest, ugliest sweatsuit I have ever seen after he got back and had showered. Thanks, mom. I think it was something she gave him to keep warm in St. Louis, where we tried to use as little heat as possible. I teased him mercilessly, and he didn’t care. He was spent.

His joints are sore from the medicine before a workout happens. His GI track is always on the fritz and it is never predictable. In the middle of a bike ride or swim, it doesn’t matter. But he loves it. He loves their “hang with the gang” time after Thursday core/track workouts. They talk life over a few beers. I’m really proud of him. I know he hides a lot of how he is feeling physically so I imagine it is worse than I’ve described. But Eric refuses to use it as an excuse. Won’t you please visit his fundraising site and donate something? Even if it is just an encouraging comment. He has this easy to remember url redirected to the site. www.ericbeatsleukemia.com

I’m sitting out this season, because I found myself being a bit bossy, who knew? :) , to him about training regimens and whatnot. I want him to enjoy the experience himself. Who knows, maybe next time well do the Long Course, half-Ironman and eventually we’ll join the Iron Team.

Peace,

Katy

Tour of California

Here is a very excited Eric. The camera strap is from my parents camera they bought in the seventies. Eric loves it.

100_0526

Here is a photo of all of the jersey-winners.

100_0531We were that close! It was fun to hear the commentators, they were in the tent next to ours. Also there was a live feed on two tvs in our tent. There was so much information on the screen: topography, speed–they got up to 56 mph on the decents! the spread of the field, etc. We were spoiled to have some finger foods and drinks too. A friend from high school that is a Ewings Sarcoma survivor, works for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and was able to be at all the legs of the race. She was able to find some VIP passes for us. We had a great time talking to other survivors, especially a lady that battled breast cancer from Texas, reconnecting with my high school friend, watching the riders come in, and enjoying the festivities of the day. Hopefully next year we can go to more than one leg of the tour!

No More Linking?

I am a big fan of links. I think it is really helpful. I hope I provide enough information that people don’t have to follow my links when they are reading a post, but sometimes I’m sure I don’t. Will that soon be illegal? What will it mean for all the bloggers out there? Here’s a very interesting Slate article about this.

Yesterday we were treated to the VIP tent at the Amgen Tour of California Stage 2 finish in Santa Cruz. It was so fun, and more info and photos will come!

What is it about fashion shows? Why do they exist? Are they more a fun thing or do they serve any purpose. I wonder. Take for example, the Academy of Art University. They allow their graduate students to show in NYC Fashion Week. Here are their current collections. While, I can see this is amazing exposure for a student, I’m not sure that this is necessary for all lines. What do you think?

Needless to say, it is nice to hop over to Style.com and get an overview of my favorite designers each time there is a fashion week. I obviously love to catch up on Christian Lacroix Haute Couture, though his couture collections are over and finished by the time all of the RTW collections come out. I’m definitely a Ralph Rucci fan and was surprised that Michelle Obama didn’t even approach him for her inauguration wardrobe. Why? I guess I’m wondering if certain gate-keepers like Ikram Goldman will be the new style setters. Here’s a link to the New York Times article on her.

If so, how does one gain favor with the new gate-keepers? Is it not fashion unless your designs are covered in the glossy magazines? What do designers aspire to these days? Red carpets, repeat customers, something else?

I’d like to start a discussion on what people feel like fashion is, what they wish stayed the same, or what has to change. Anything goes.

Katy

Swoon

So I was talking with our landlady and she asked if I had seen the calla lilies yet. What?? I mentioned I’d seen green ground cover, but I just thought it was ivy. She tipped me off that if we cut the calla lilies, their juices can stain clothing. I would never have thought of that, but am excited to see them growing. Here a shot of their current status.

100_0520And a close-up.

100_0521See the raindrops? We’ve been enjoying the sprinkles all weekend. Especially since they are already talking about water conservation efforts in Sonoma, not far from here. I hope the rain continues!

Katy

I’ve been eyeing a recipe for Energy/Granola Bars for a bit now by Ellie Krieger. Since I don’t have a food processor , I used my trusty blender. Um, I don’t think it works quite the same. Here’s the ingredient line-up.

Someone got into the dried apricots. Hmm…

100_0509The tray on the left I made with the blender. The one on the right, I just chopped the fruit and hand mixed it. The chopped and mixed variety was like home-made granola. Eric approved and has eaten half of it so far.

100_0512Here’s my little serving sized baggies.

100_0517

My bars weren’t as thick as these, so I doubled the serving size. I really think a food processor would help tremendously. My blender got a bit overheated and was a bit too small for all the goodness. Regardless, of how they look, they tasted really good.

Britex Fabric Sale

I’m not sure if any of you are in the Bay area. I signed up to be on the Britex mailing list and quite frankly thought I’d fallen through the cracks because I never heard from them. Until today. Looks like they are having a sale Feb. 16-17 with 30% off everything. There are a few exceptions, leave a comment if you’re really curious. I see no mention of it on their website, but it doesn’t look like you need a coupon or anything. Enjoy! I know I will.

I called to see if they carried tie interfacing. They don’t. They are looking for a supplier, though. I purchased a tie-making book from David Coffin and followed Cidell, through her tie-making saga. Looks like I’ll be ordering interfacing from the person David Coffin recommended–I’m not sure you can get it anywhere else! The price is more than fair, I just hate waiting for shipping. Eric is chomping at the bit for me to get moving on this project. I already bought the silk, 20 yard bundle for $20 at Fabric Mart and there is a really cool grey and green striped one he’s claimed. Thankfully 3 yards came in the bundle, so I’m thinking I’ll make a coordinating skirt. Cheesy, I know, but it has a very preppy military school feel and I think we can pull it off!

Peace,

Katy
